What is PET Yarn?

2025-12-05

PET yarn, short for polyethylene terephthalate yarn, is a fiber made from polyester. In the modern textile industry, it is one of the most produced and widely used synthetic fibers.

Traditional PET Yarn vs. Recycled PET Yarn

Traditional PET Yarn:

Primarily made from the polymerization of petrochemical raw materials—purified terephthalic acid (PTA) and ethylene glycol (EG).

Recycled PET Yarn (rPET):

This is currently the most popular type. It originates from recycled waste PET plastic products, most commonly PET bottle flakes (plastic water bottles, beverage bottles). These waste plastics undergo complex processes such as washing, crushing, melting, and spinning to be transformed back into polyester fibers or PET yarn that can be woven. This not only achieves resource recycling but also actively practices the concept of a circular economy.

Superior Performance Characteristics of PET Yarn

PET yarn is widely used in various fields due to its core advantages:

  • High Strength and Durability: PET yarn possesses excellent abrasion resistance and tear resistance, giving it extremely high durability, making it suitable for manufacturing items requiring long-term use and resistance to friction.

  • Excellent Elasticity and Wrinkle Resistance: It has good elastic recovery, resulting in fabrics with excellent wrinkle resistance, easily maintaining their shape and appearance.

  • Excellent Chemical Resistance: PET yarn has good resistance to various chemicals such as acids and alkalis, allowing it to maintain stable performance in various environments.

  • Low Moisture Absorption and Quick-Drying: Polyester fibers themselves have low moisture absorption, so fabrics made from them (such as sportswear) are easy to wash and dry quickly, making them very practical.

  • UV Resistance (Specific Processes): Through specific production processes, some PET yarns can possess good UV resistance, making them suitable for outdoor and sun protection products.

Core Environmental Value

Recycled PET yarn is an important force driving the development of environmentally friendly materials. Using recycled PET bottle flakes in production significantly reduces dependence on virgin petroleum resources and effectively reduces environmental pollution from waste plastics, aligning with the trend of sustainable development.

Wide Applications of PET Yarn

Thanks to its versatility and cost-effectiveness, PET yarn has permeated all aspects of our daily lives.

  • Apparel: Used to make sportswear, outdoor clothing, T-shirts, jackets, etc. Recycled PET yarn, in particular, has become the preferred textile raw material for many international brands practicing sustainable development.

  • Home Textiles: Curtains, carpets, bed sheets, cushions, etc.

  • Industrial Applications: Automotive interiors, filter materials, conveyor belts, fishing nets, ropes, etc., utilizing its durable and high-strength properties.

  • Nonwoven Fabrics: Used in medical and health fields, building waterproofing, etc.

With increasing environmental awareness and technological advancements, PET yarn, especially recycled PET yarn, will play an increasingly important role in the global textile market.
