What Is Space Dyed Yarn?

Space Dyed Yarn is a multicolor yarn in which different sections of the yarn length are dyed with two or more distinct colors in a repeating or irregular pattern. Unlike solid-dyed yarn — where a single color is applied uniformly across the entire package — space dyeing applies color in discrete zones along the yarn axis, so that when the yarn is knitted or woven into fabric, each color zone contributes to a self-patterning, variegated, or heather effect without any additional Jacquard programming or yarn changeover.

GC FIBER produces space dyed yarn using both warp-printing (knit-de-knit) and package-dyeing with resist-printing methods on polyester, nylon, and polypropylene base yarns. Color interval length, transition sharpness, and the number of colors per repeat are all adjustable, giving designers precise control over the fabric pattern density and visual rhythm that emerges on the finished textile.

Application

Space dyed yarn creates pattern directly at the yarn stage, dramatically reducing the complexity and cost of achieving multicolor fabric effects compared to Jacquard weaving or printing:

  • Socks & Hosiery — The most established end-use for space dyed yarn. Short color intervals (5–15 cm) on fine-denier yarn produce self-striping, speckled, or pooling effects on circular sock knitting machines without any machine reprogramming.
  • Hand Knitting & Craft Yarn — Long-interval space dyed yarn (50–200 cm) is highly popular in the hand-knitting market for its self-patterning scarves, shawls, and garments. The unpredictable pooling of color is a primary design feature rather than a defect.
  • Sportswear & Activewear Fabrics — Space dyed DTY or FDY knitted into jersey or interlock creates a heather-like, marled appearance in activewear without the cost of blending two separately dyed yarns.
  • Carpet & Area Rugs — Space dyed HBY or BCF in carpet produces random multicolor patterns that effectively hide soiling and wear in high-traffic commercial installations.
  • Upholstery & Home Décor Textiles — Woven with space dyed weft yarn, upholstery fabric achieves a handwoven, artisanal appearance at machine-production speed and cost.
  • Swimwear & Beachwear — Chlorine-resistant space dyed nylon yarn produces vivid multicolor swimwear patterns that retain their color contrast through pool and sun exposure.

Advantage

  • Pattern Without Machine Programming — A single space dyed yarn running on a standard circular knitting machine produces multicolor patterns automatically. No Jacquard attachment, no yarn carrier switching, no additional machine cost — dramatically lowering the entry cost for multicolor fabric production.
  • Infinite Pattern Variation from One SKU — The same space dyed yarn produces different visual patterns depending on stitch gauge, knitting direction, and tension. This gives designers a broad pattern library from a single yarn development investment.
  • Reduced Dye Waste vs. Piece Printing — Space dyeing at the yarn stage uses significantly less dye and water than roller or screen printing the same pattern onto finished fabric, as only the yarn surface is colored rather than the full fabric cross-section.
  • Excellent Wash Fastness — Because color is applied to the yarn before fabric construction, dye penetration into the filament cross-section is thorough. Our space dyed polyester achieves ISO 105-C06 wash fastness Grade 4–5, equivalent to piece-dyed fabric.
  • Custom Color Repeat to Your Design — We work from Pantone references, physical swatches, or fabric images to develop color palettes and interval lengths matched to your target fabric appearance. Lab dips are provided for approval before bulk production.
  • Compatible With Standard Downstream Equipment — Space dyed yarn processes identically to solid-dyed yarn on knitting machines, weaving looms, and embroidery frames — no equipment modifications required.
