What Is Agricultural & Shade Net Yarn

Agricultural and shade net yarn is a lightweight, UV-stabilized yarn, most commonly made from high-density polyethylene (HDPE) or polypropylene (PP), used to weave or knit the mesh fabric that farmers and growers rely on for shading, pest protection, and crop support. The yarn needs to survive long outdoor exposure to sun and weather while staying light enough to avoid putting excessive load on support structures.

Shade net fabric made from this yarn is typically knitted in a leno or raschel construction, which allows different shade percentages, from light shading around 30% up to dense shading above 90%, simply by adjusting mesh density and yarn coverage. Anti-insect net, by comparison, uses a tighter, more uniform mesh structure to physically block pests while still allowing airflow and light.

HDPE vs PP for Agricultural Netting

HDPE yarn is the more common choice for shade net and anti-insect net because of its good UV resistance and flexibility for knitting fine, tight mesh structures. PP yarn is often used in simpler applications such as crop support net, bird net, or lower-cost general agricultural mesh where extreme UV durability is less critical.
