Air-Textured Yarn (ATY)

What Is Air-Textured Yarn?

Air-Textured Yarn (ATY) is produced by feeding one or more filament yarns through a high-velocity air-jet nozzle. The turbulent airflow creates random loops and entanglements along the yarn surface, giving ATY a soft, spun-like hand feel that closely resembles natural fiber yarns — without the irregularities of staple spinning.

At GC FIBER, we manufacture ATY across a broad range of deniers and polymer bases (polyester, nylon, PP), with precise control over loop frequency, bulk level, and finishing treatments. Whether you need a cotton-like touch for apparel or a durable, textured surface for upholstery, our ATY lines deliver consistent quality from spool to spool.

Application

ATY's unique combination of bulk, softness, and durability makes it one of the most versatile engineered yarns in the market. Key end-use sectors include:

  • Upholstery & Furniture Fabric — The looped surface creates a natural, woven texture ideal for sofa fabrics, chair covers, and automotive seating.
  • Home Textiles — Curtains, blackout liners, pillow covers, and table linens benefit from ATY's dimensional stability and cotton-like drape.
  • Apparel & Outerwear — Used as shell or lining fabric yarn in jackets, sportswear shells, and workwear where a natural hand feel is required.
  • Narrow Fabrics & Webbing — Belts, straps, and elastic webbing use ATY for softness against skin and abrasion resistance.
  • Technical Textiles — Filter media, geotextile composites, and industrial wiping cloths leverage ATY's high surface area and bulk.
  • Footwear & Bags — Linings and decorative trims where a premium textile look is needed at a competitive cost.

Advantage

  • Natural Spun-Like Hand Feel — The random loop structure mimics staple-spun yarn texture, delivering softness without the linting and pilling typical of short-fiber yarns.
  • Excellent Bulk & Coverage — Higher air pressure creates more loops, giving fabrics better opacity and warmth with less raw material per square meter.
  • Superior Abrasion Resistance — Continuous filament construction retains strength even after heavy washing and mechanical stress.
  • Colorfastness Ready — Available in dope-dyed variants (black, navy, and custom shades) for waterless dyeing, reducing wastewater by up to 80 %.
  • Wide Denier Flexibility — From fine 75D for apparel to heavy 1200D for technical webbing — all from one supplier.
  • Consistent Lot-to-Lot Quality — Automated air-jet texturing lines with inline tension monitoring ensure ≤ 1.5 % CV denier variation.
  • Low MOQ for Sampling — We support R&D teams with trial cones starting from 5 kg per color/denier.
