Flame Retardant (FR) Yarn

Introduction

Flame Retardant (FR) Yarn is a safety-critical textile material engineered to resist ignition, slow the spread of flames, and self-extinguish when the heat source is removed. GC FIBER specializes in Inherently Flame Retardant (IFR) yarns, where the fire-resistant properties are embedded into the polymer chain during the extrusion process (typically through the addition of phosphorus-based compounds). Unlike "treated" FR fabrics that use a topical coating which can wash off over time, our IFR yarn provides permanent, life-long protection that cannot be laundered away. This makes it the standard for public safety, transportation, and industrial environments where failure is not an option.

The effectiveness of FR yarn is measured by the Limiting Oxygen Index (LOI). While standard polyester has an LOI of approximately 20−21 (it burns easily in air), our FR yarns typically achieve an LOI of 28 to 34, meaning they require a much higher concentration of oxygen to support combustion. When exposed to extreme heat, our FR filaments form a protective "char" layer that acts as a thermal barrier, preventing the molten polymer from "dripping"—a major cause of secondary fires and skin burns. Our FR range includes high-tenacity versions for industrial use and fine-denier versions for decorative home textiles, ensuring that safety does not compromise aesthetics or strength.
